‘Earth surface processes and landscape evolution of mountain environments’

My research integrates geological evidence, topographic analysis, and geochronometric methods (e.g. CRN, OSL, 14C dating) to explore the landscape evolution, geohazards and environmental change in high-altitude and glaciated mountain environments. I particularly focus on processes of erosion (glacial, periglacial, fluvial) and sediment transport, providing insights into how mountain landscapes respond to climate shifts across various timescales.

I have intentionally worked across various disciplines including Quaternary geology, glaciology, tectonics, geomorphology, geohazards and environmental change, building a broad range of research skills (field, laboratory, numerical) and expertise as an early career researcher.

I currently hold a lectureship in the School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh. I grew up in Cumbria and the English Lake District, which formed the basis of my interest in landscapes and the processes that shape the Earth’s surface. I completed my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Glasgow and Royal Holloway, University of London, respectively, before moving across the pond to complete my Ph.D. at the University of Cincinnati. I then went on to a postdoc at the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) in Potsdam, Germany. More recently, I have held lectureships in the School of Geographical Sciences at the University of Bristol, UK and the Department of Geography at Durham University, UK.

When I am not covered in sediment, I like to spend my time biking (road, trail or all-terrain). This hobby has even made its way into my fieldwork, where I have retrieved sediment samples from a valley in northern India via mountain bike. The outbound steep slopes and high elevations presented a challenge, but the views during the descent were spectacular!
